Royal Carribean Worker Admits to Sexually Abusing Sleeping Passenger

Posted on April 26, 2015

criminal_justice_jurisprudence (2)NEWARK, NJ—A 25-year-old  man last week admitted to sexually abusing a sleeping woman aboard a Royal Carribean cruise ship, prosecutors said.

Karan Seechurn, 25, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Esther Salas in Newark to one count of abusive sexual contact.

According to documents and court records, here is what happened:

Seechurn was employed by a cruise line and was responsible for restocking the minibars located in passengers’ rooms.

In order to do his job, he was provided with a key that gave him access to passengers’ rooms.

Seechurn admitted that on Dec. 23, 2014, while he was off-duty, he entered a passenger’s room and saw a sleeping woman. Seechurn admitted that he touched the passenger’s genitalia while she was asleep.

Seechurn is facing up to three years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced in August.

The federal government has special maritime jurisdiction over sexual abuse cases, such as those that occur on cruise ships, officials stated.
