ALABAMA — A woman who worked at a hospital at Fort Benning Army Base in Georgia has been was indicted for allegedly stealing the IDs of military personnel, filing more than 1,000 false tax returns and claiming more than $2.2 in fraudulent refunds, federal authorities announced Thursday.
Tracy Mitchell, a resident of Phenix City, Ala., was indicted in U.S. District Court on eight counts of wire fraud and eight counts of aggravated identity theft, said prosecutors.
Mitchell worked at the hospital on the Fort Benning where she had access to military IDs, including soldiers who were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, prosecutors said.
Mitchell is facing up to 20 years in prison on each felony count and a two-year sentence for each aggravated identity theft count, according to federal officials.
