Geronimo was born in 1829 in New Mexico. He was originally named Goyathlay, which means “One Who Yawns.”
On March 5, 1858, Mexican soldiers killed his mother, wife and three children in an attack on the Chiricauhua Apache encampment. He spent years extracting revenge, terrorizing Mexican settlements and white people.
He was a fierce warrior who became something of a curiosity and appeared in fairs.
In February 1909, after a night of drinking, Geronimo passed out in the cold, subsequently contracted pneumonia and died.
