INDIANAPOLIS
A federal judge on Monday sentenced Edward B. Tunwar, 55, to four years and four months for his role in smuggling cell phones, heroin and cigarettes into the U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute from June 2013 to December 2013, officials said.
U.S. District Judge Jane E. Magnus-Stinson also fined Tunwar $1,000 for his role in smuggling contraband into the federal prison.
During that time, Tunwar supervised the operations of the kitchen in the penitentiary.
While working in the kitchen, officials said Tunwar provided a federal inmate with multiple cellular telephones and 130 packs of tobacco.
On December 9, 2013, officials said Tunwar smuggled an ounce of heroin into the penitentiary and delivered it to another federal inmate. Prison guards at the penitentiary seized the heroin inside of the prison, officials said.
