A massive manhunt is underway for a 20-year-old armed man police say was involved in a shootout that critically injured a Fort Worth police officer Tuesday afternoon and left his father dead, officials say.
The incident began at about 2:45 p.m. as police attempted a felony traffic stop along Interstate 30 near Hulen Street, according to Fort Worth police.
The officer – whose identity has not been released – followed the driver west on I-30, past west Loop 820 to Longvue Avenue, where the driver exited and headed south. The driver stopped along the 2800 block of Longvue Avenue, near Chapin Road, where he and a passenger, both armed, jumped from the vehicle and ran into a wooded area, police said.
The officer continued after them and an exchange of gunfire took place, Knight said, injuring the officer and killing one of the shooters.
NBC 5 has learned the officer was shot three times in the chest and once in the leg before being transported by CareFlite to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. The officer is in critical condition with injuries that are considered life threatening, officials said.
During a press conference Tuesday afternoon at JPS, Fort Worth Chief of Police Joel Fitzgerald said the officer is alive and receiving treatment at the hospital. Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price asked for prayers for the injured officer, his family and all of the Fort Worth Police Department.
The shooters have been identified as father and son. Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler said 42-year-old Ed McIver was killed at the scene and the second gunman, 20-year-old Ed McIver Jr, is on the run.
A massive manhunt is underway where dozens of Fort Worth police officers are searching the area for McIver, whom they consider to be desperate, armed and dangerous.
McIver is believed to be on foot in the 76008 ZIP code; police are asking residents in the area to remain indoors and call 911 if they see anything suspicious.
