HARVEY, La. (WGNO) – A Jefferson Parish deputy died Wednesday afternoon while attempting to conduct a “pedestrian stop” on Manhattan Blvd. in Harvey.
Col. John Fortunato has identified the deputy as David Michel Jr.
During a press conference, Fortunato said one suspect is in custody. Initial reports said authorities were looking for two men.
The shooting happened shortly before 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Manhattan Boulevard and Ascot Road.
The Jefferson Parish Coroner Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich said deputy Michel was shot three times in the back.
JPSO has shut down Manhattan Boulevard northbound at Lapalco Blvd. The southbound lanes of Manhattan will remain open.
