(KUTV) Prosecutors filed charges Thursday morning against Michael Vandemerwe, 23, who police said shot his father in the head, shot his grandmother, then used a knife to stab his grandfather multiple times.
Vandemerwe now faces one charge of aggravated murder, and two charges of attempted aggravated murder. Court documents say the grandmother has still not regained consciousness and the bleeding in her brain has not stopped.
Charging documents describe the chaotic scene as the grandmother called 911 as her husband and son struggled to pin Michael Vandemerwe down. At some point during the call, the grandmother told the dispatcher that Michael had a gun then said “Michael, please don’t,” at which point a gunshot was heard on the 911 call, according to the probable cause statement. The dispatcher then heard a male screaming “Michael please, please, please, then there was a second gunshot.”
Detectives sid Michael Vandemerwe first attacked his grandfather who was sleeping in a bedroom of the home. The grandfather was stabbed multiple times, but made it to a bathroom and was able to lock the door. Court documents say the grandfather reported hearing two gunshots while he was locked in the bathroom, followed by Michael shooting a shotgun round through the bathroom door.
When police arrived at the home and arrested Michael Vandemerwe. An officer reported him saying, “I’m not a suspect, I did it. There’s no question about it.”
Michael Vandemerwe remains in jail. Court documents do not describe any motive for why Michael Vandemerwe may have attacked his family, but a detective wrote that he told him he shot his dad and grandmother after they tried to protect the grandfather.
