A federal grand jury indicted a former Hamtramck, Michigan police officer for violating the civil rights of two civilians by assaulting them with a pistol during arrests on the same night, officials announced Thursday.
The jury returned a six-count indictment charging Ryan McInerney, 42, with civil rights violations, obstruction of justice, and firearms offenses in connection with two civilian arrests on July 22, 2014.
The indictment also charges McInerney with two counts of using a firearm along with writing false reports to cover up his excessive uses of force.
One of the civilians suffered broken facial bones and lacerations requiring stitches, and the other civilian suffered broken teeth, among other injuries, according to officials.
McInerney is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
