Antonio Williams reviews Crazy Rich Asians.
2.5 Stars out of 5
The movie was creative, a little campy, a little slow in places, and alienating. It took the entire film before the main character finally found her voice–unapologetically–as an American. Her mother did a phenomenal job.
The immigrant story from her mother and for Rachel were spot on! The movie had plenty of levels, but was very disorganized and bordered too closely to a cliche Cinderella story.
The famous Mahjong scene was poorly executed. It was sloppy and misplaced–despite the powerful message it carried. Astrid’s storyline was also terribly misplaced. This movie could have been a contender but spent entirely too much time trying to show the Rich side instead of nurturing the American Immigrant story. So 2.5 stars.
