Whittier, Calif.
A 34-year old man plead no contest for purposely driving a vehicle into a La Mirada gym, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.
Sergio Gabriel Reyes of Whittier entered the plea Monday to one count of assault with a deadly weapon, an automobile.
Deputy District Attorney Robert Villa said Reyes was immediately sentenced to nine years in state prison as a result of the negotiated plea.
In March 2019, the defendant’s gym membership was terminated due to alleged inappropriate behavior. He was harassing and stalking women, according to news reports.
Reyes had disputes with gym personnel and stated he would return, the prosecutor said.
On March 19, 2019, Reyes took a relative’s vehicle, drove to the gym and crashed through the front window where an employee was standing at the reception desk, nearly hitting the employee.
The defendant fled the scene and was arrested shortly thereafter, the prosecutor added.
