A Los Angeles police officer has been charged with allegedly stealing money from an employee’s personal property while inside an illegal marijuana grow facility earlier this year, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday.
Luis Alfredo Mota, 46, was charged with one felony count of second-degree burglary and one misdemeanor count of petty theft, officials stated.
The case was filed for warrant on September 22. Mota is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Deputy District Attorney Deann Rivard of the Justice System Integrity Division is prosecuting the case.
On Jan. 27, 2020, the defendant is accused of stealing money from an employee’s backpack while he was on duty and was helping serve a search warrant at a warehouse in downtown Los Angeles. He was arrested a short time later.
If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of three years in county jail.
The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.
