LOS ANGELES
A man was charged Tuesday with trying to kill two Los Angeles police officers after he entered the Harbor Station over the weekend, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office stated.
Jose Cerpa Guzman, 49, of Los Angeles was charged with two counts each of attempted murder on a peace officer and assault with a semiautomatic firearm; and one felony count each of second-degree robbery, evading and resisting an officer.
Guzman is accused of entering a police station in San Pedro and getting into a verbal altercation with an officer shortly before 10 p.m. on Sept. 26.
The defendant left the building but returned and allegedly began attacking the officer. Guzman is accused of grabbing the officer’s gun and striking the officer with it several times.
While Guzman was outside, gunfire was exchanged between the defendant and a second officer who had arrived in the lobby. No one was injured in the shooting.
Guzman allegedly fled the scene and was found a short time later when he is accused of resisting arrest.
Prosecutors are recommending bail be set at $2.2 million.
If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a possible maximum life sentence in state prison.
Guzman is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
