A man who was arrested with ten pounds of methamphetamine in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was sentenced this week to more than twelve years in federal prison, according to federal prosecutors.
Malik Sekou Sahid Buchanan, age 40, from Burlington, Iowa, received the prison term after a July 6 guilty plea to possessing meth with intent to distribute.
Officers found Buchanan in a car in the parking lot of the Walmart on Blairs Ferry Road NE on May 30, 2019, according to the complaint affidavit.
Officers said they smelled marijuana coming from his car and saw a bag inside the car that contained a substance that appeared to be meth, the Gazette reported.
Officers searched his car and found two packages containing suspected meth under the passenger seat, the affidavit states.
Officers also seized $1,320 in cash and 10 grams of marijuana, which were found on Buchanan at the time, according to the affidavit.
Buchanan was arrested for delivering ten pounds of methamphetamine to the Cedar Rapids area.
Buchanan had previously provided an individual with five pounds of methamphetamine. Buchanan was charging $5,000 per pound of meth.
During the arrest, officers recovered methamphetamine from Buchanan’s car weighing approximately ten pounds. The meth was 100% pure.
United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams sentenced Buchanan. ]There is no parole in the federal system.
Buchanan is being held in the U.S. Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to federal prison.
