SANTA ANA, California
The San Pedro man, who was already serving a life sentence in state prison, was sentenced to nearly 15 years in federal prison Tuesday for the armed robbery that occurred last year in Harbor City.
The victim, the driver of the armored truck, was shot and critically injured in the incident.
U.S. District Judge David O. Carter sentenced 48-year-old Gregory James on Tuesday.
On June 12, James entered a guilty plea to a charge of Hobbs Act robbery and a charge of contributing to a violent crime by discharging a handgun. His incarceration by the federal government began in October 2022.
James and his accomplice, Lamond Akins, 31, from Compton, robbed a Loomis armored truck on October 17, 2022.
The robbery happened after the driver had completed servicing an ATM at a Bank of America branch in Harbor City. While the driver was at the ATM, James and Akins waited for him to complete before robbing him with their weapons drawn.
The robbery left the victim injured and shot. Before driving away, James and Akins grabbed a bag containing around $145,000 in cash from the Loomis firm. The corporation operates in 40 states and three countries.
The gunshot caused serious injuries to the victim truck driver, who had to undergo surgery.
