VAN NUYS, CA
Graciela Xiomara Castellanos, 37, has been charged with the alleged murder and assault on a child under eight resulting in death, following the April 11 drowning of her 7-year-old daughter in a Van Nuys apartment, officials announced Tuesday.
“The alleged facts of this case — where a mother is accused of intentionally taking the life of her young child — are profoundly tragic and deeply unsettling,” District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said. “Our sympathy goes out to the family and loved ones of this young girl, whose life was cut short far too soon. We are committed to seeking justice through a thorough and fair prosecution and ensuring that the legal process honors the memory of the child and supports the healing of her family.”
Castellanos pleaded not guilty at her arraignment. A preliminary hearing is set for June 17 in Van Nuys. Bail was set at $2 million, according to officials.
If convicted, she faces 25 years to life in prison. Deputy DA MacKenzie Teymouri is prosecuting the case, which is being investigated by LAPD’s Juvenile Division.
All charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
