Physician Guilty of Illegal Distribution of Opioids and Healthcare Fraud Conspiracies

Posted on April 16, 2025

A federal jury this week has convicted Dr. Neil K. Anand, 48, of Bensalem, Pennsylvania, for his role in healthcare fraud, wire fraud, and illegal distribution of controlled substances, officials stated.

Evidence at trial showed Anand submitted fraudulent claims to Medicare, OPM, Independence Blue Cross, and Anthem for “Goody Bags” — unnecessary prescriptions forced on patients to receive opioids.

His in-house pharmacies dispensed the drugs, netting over $2.3 million. Patients were coerced into accepting the bags to obtain prescriptions for controlled substances, according to authorities.

Anand also conspired to illegally distribute oxycodone, authorizing unlicensed interns to issue prescriptions using blank forms he had pre-signed.

He personally prescribed 20,850 oxycodone tablets to just nine patients. When he learned of the investigation, he hid $1.2 million by transferring it into accounts under his father’s name and for his minor daughter.

Anand was found guilty of conspiracy, healthcare fraud, money laundering, unlawful monetary transactions, and drug distribution.

He faces up to 130 years in prison when sentenced on Aug. 19.

Trial Attorneys Paul J. Koob, Patrick J. Campbell, and Arun Bodapati of the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section are prosecuting the case.
