Federal Prosecutors Seek the Death Penalty Against Prison Inmate Charged With Murder

Posted on May 7, 2025

A federal grand jury in Oklahoma City indicted Jasper Reed, 27, an inmate at the Federal Transfer Center (FTC), on charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and assault causing serious injury, officials announced this week.

Federal prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in this case.

According to authorities, Reed entered federal custody in December 2023 to serve a 51-month sentence for a firearms conviction. On April 27, 2024, officers allegedly found him strangling his cellmate. Pepper spray failed to subdue Reed, and multiple officers were needed to restrain him. The victim was hospitalized with multiple facial fractures and a broken hyoid bone.

Less than two weeks later, on May 8, Reed allegedly murdered another cellmate. The victim was found dead in their shared cell, and an autopsy ruled the death a homicide by manual strangulation, citing fractured neck bones and internal bleeding
