Former Franklin County Jail Deputy Pleads Guilty to Civil Rights Violation

Posted on June 6, 2025

A former Franklin County sheriff’s deputy pleaded guilty in federal court to violating an inmate’s civil rights, officials announced Friday.

Matthew Carey, 28, of Grove City, Ohio admitted he knowingly exposed a pretrial detainee to serious harm by revealing the inmate’s pending child rape charge to another detainee, Gmier McCall, in March 2022.

Carey’s disclosure led to the inmate being assaulted in jail.

Both Carey and McCall now face up to 10 years in prison for depriving the victim of his civil rights.
