FBI Releases 2024 National Crime Statistics:
The FBI has released its annual “Reported Crimes in the Nation” compilation, which includes data on over 14 million criminal offenses reported in 2024 by more than 16,000 law enforcement agencies.
These agencies, covering 95.6% of the U.S. population, submitted data through the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) and the Summary Reporting System.

Violent Crime Overview

Violent crime occurred every 25.9 seconds on average.

Murder: Every 31.1 minutes

Rape: Every 4.1 minutes
Estimated National Changes (2024 vs. 2023):

Overall violent crime: ↓ 4.5%

Murder / Non-negligent manslaughter: ↓ 14.9%

Rape (revised definition): ↓ 5.2%

Aggravated assault: ↓ 3.0%

Robbery: ↓ 8.9%
Hate Crime Statistics – 2024

16,419 agencies submitted hate crime data (95.1% population coverage).

11,679 criminal incidents and 13,683 related offenses were reported.

Motivations included race, ethnicity, ancestry, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender, and gender identity.

Among agencies reporting six or more common months in both years:

Hate crime incidents decreased by 1.5% (from 11,041 in 2023 to 10,873 in 2024).

Rape Definition Change

2024 marks the first year that violent crime estimates from 2013–2024 are based solely on the revised rape definition.
-
Years 2005–2012 will still reflect data under the legacy definition.

The revised definition includes broader circumstances and was fully adopted in 2017.
