COLUMBUS, Ohio

An Ohio man admitted in federal court to committing a hate crime after assaulting two Jewish students outside a Columbus bar.
According to court records, on Nov. 10, 2023, Timur Mamatov, 20, of Tipp City, confronted a group of students on North High Street.
After spotting one student wearing a “Chai” pendant — a symbol commonly associated with Judaism — Mamatov asked if they were Jewish.
When the students confirmed, he attacked, punching one victim and fracturing his jaw. A second victim suffered a broken nose as the fight spilled into the street.
Mamatov was charged by a bill of information on July 3 and pleaded guilty to violating the Hate Crimes Prevention Act. The offense carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison. A judge will determine his sentence after reviewing federal guidelines and other statutory factors.
The case is being investigated by the FBI’s Cincinnati Field Office.
