Former Maui Police Department officer Carlos Frate, 40, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of using unreasonable force against an arrestee.
According to court documents, on Jan. 6, 2024, Frate repeatedly tased a person in custody who was not resisting or posing any threat. Frate admitted he knew his actions were unjustified but continued to deploy the taser despite the arrestee’s pleas to stop.
Frate faces up to 10 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 6.
