ST. PAUL, Minn.
A Mexican national has pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, federal officials announced last week.
According to court documents, Mercado-Chaparro sold a pound of methamphetamine to an undercover police officer. Authorities later followed him and observed him conducting additional drug transactions.
Several days later, officers saw Mercado-Chaparro remove two large garbage bags from his pickup truck and place them in a nearby Jeep. Police stopped the Jeep a short time later, and a drug-sniffing dog alerted to the odor of narcotics.

During a search of the vehicle, officers found approximately 250 pounds of methamphetamine inside the garbage bags and a cooler.
Investigators later obtained a search warrant for Mercado-Chaparro’s pickup truck. When officers searched the truck bed, they discovered an additional 630 pounds of methamphetamine.
In total, authorities say Mercado-Chaparro possessed nearly 900 pounds of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute.
