Former Corrections Officer Sentenced to Prison for Covering Up an Assault on Inmate

Posted on April 8, 2026

KENTUCKY

A Harold, Kentucky, man was sentenced Wednesday to 17 months in federal prison for falsifying records to cover up an assault on an inmate, authorities said.

Quick facts:

  • Defendant: Michael Childers, 47, of Harold, Kentucky
  • Position: Former lieutenant at U.S. Penitentiary Big Sandy
  • Charge: Falsification of records
  • Sentence: 17 months in prison
  • Incident date: April 13, 2021
  • Location: U.S. Penitentiary Big Sandy, Inez, Kentucky

Childers was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Robert Wier.

According to court records, Childers was in the lieutenants’ office with several staff members when an inmate seeking protective custody was brought in. The inmate pleaded for protection but was assaulted by staff without justification.

Afterward, Childers filed an incident report falsely claiming the inmate had struck him with his head and a closed fist. He admitted he knew the statements were false and wrote them to impede the investigation into the assault.
