Federal court orders cartel boss Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García to serve life in prison and forfeit $15 billion after admitting leadership of one of the world’s largest drug trafficking enterprises.
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García, 76, of Sinaloa, Mexico, was sentenced Monday to life in federal prison and ordered to forfeit $15 billion after admitting he led the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the world’s most powerful and violent drug trafficking organizations, officials stated.
Zambada García pleaded guilty to serving as the principal leader of a continuing criminal enterprise and to a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) charge after multiple federal cases were consolidated under a plea agreement in New York.
Federal prosecutors said Zambada García spent nearly four decades directing the cartel’s trafficking of tons of fentanyl, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine into the United States while overseeing a criminal organization that relied on murder, intimidation, corruption and bribery to protect its operations.
“Ismael Zambada Garcia spent nearly four decades poisoning American communities to make billions of dollars in profit and ordering the murders of anyone who stood in his way. Today, that chapter closes for good,” said U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. for the Eastern District of New York. “He will spend the rest of his life in a U.S. prison, exactly where he belongs.

According to court records, the Sinaloa Cartel grew out of the former Mexican Federation in the late 1980s and became one of the world’s largest and most powerful drug trafficking organizations.
What began primarily as a cocaine-smuggling operation evolved into a sprawling criminal enterprise that also manufactured and distributed fentanyl, with prosecutors alleging the cartel imported precursor chemicals from China, produced the synthetic opioid in laboratories across Mexico and trafficked it into the United States.
Federal authorities said the cartel generated billions of dollars through drug sales and used an extensive money laundering network to move profits back to Mexico. Those proceeds funded sophisticated land, air and maritime transportation networks capable of moving multi-ton shipments of cocaine from South America through Central America and Mexico into the United States.
Prosecutors said Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García assumed greater control of the cartel after the 2016 capture of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. They alleged he maintained the organization’s operations through a system of violence, intimidation and corruption, including bribing government officials and law enforcement officers to protect drug shipments and evade capture.
Witnesses in previous federal prosecutions, including the trials of Guzmán and former Mexican Public Security Secretary Genaro García Luna, testified that corruption at multiple levels of government helped the cartel operate on a massive scale, according to court records.
