JACKSON, MS—The former head of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, Christopher B. Epps, and Cecil McCrory, a former Mississippi legislator, former Justice Court Judge, former Chairman of the Rankin County School Board, and a local businessman, entered guilty pleas this week to money laundering.
Epps also pled guilty to one of filing a false tax return.
Epps and McCrory are accused of being involved in a scheme in which Mr. McCrory directed more than $1 million to Mr. Epps, including cash and mortgage payments, in exchange for lucrative state contracts, according to the indictment.
Both men will be sentenced in June.
The maximum penalty for money laundering conspiracy is 20 years in prison. The maximum penalty for filing a false tax return is three years in prison.
