IOWA<\/strong> – A former police officer who ran up to a suspect being held down by three other officers and kicked him in the face was convicted today of deprivation of rights under the color of law for assaulting a man during an arrest on Feb. 19, 2013, federal officials announced.<\/p>\n

Colin Boone<\/strong>, previously employed as an officer of the Des Moines, Iowa, Police Department, is facing up to 10 years in prison when he is sentence, according to officials.<\/p>\n

The sentencing date is pending.<\/p>\n

The evidence presented at trial showed that Boone ran up to an arrestee and kicked him in the face while he was being held on the ground, face-down, by three other officers.\u00a0 The evidence also showed that Boone\u2019s kick knocked out the victim\u2019s front teeth and broke his nose, officials said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Department of Justice is proud to stand behind the fine law enforcement officers with the Des Moines Police Department who honored their badges by providing truthful information about the defendant\u2019s criminal actions,\u201d said Acting Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta. \u00a0<\/strong>\u201cWe are committed to working with our law enforcement partners to hold accountable officers such as former officer Boone, who engage in willful uses of excessive force.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cThis was a violent, criminal action\u201d stated U.S. Attorney Nicholas Klinefeldt.<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cDefendant Colin Boone kicked a defenseless man in the face.\u00a0 He will now be held responsible in the same way as all of the defendants he has helped put in jail.\u00a0 This was also a betrayal of trust: former police officer Colin Boone betrayed the trust of the public he served and of the officers with whom he served.\u201d<\/p>\n
