{"id":10078,"date":"2015-03-16T14:51:41","date_gmt":"2015-03-16T21:51:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=10078"},"modified":"2015-03-16T14:51:41","modified_gmt":"2015-03-16T21:51:41","slug":"salesman-sentenced-to-federal-prison-for-odometer-fraud-scheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=10078","title":{"rendered":"Salesman Sentenced to Federal Prison for Odometer Fraud Scheme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/u.s.DISTRICT-COURT-CENTRAL-DISTRICT.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2324\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/u.s.DISTRICT-COURT-CENTRAL-DISTRICT-150x150.png\" alt=\"u.s.DISTRICT COURT CENTRAL DISTRICT\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>LOS ANGELES<\/strong> &#8211; A former car salesman who tampered with the odometer was sentenced today in Los Angeles to one year and one day in federal Prison for Odometer Fraud Scheme, according to officials.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jeffrey Levy<\/strong>, 63, of Woodland Hills, California, was also ordered to pay $115,818 in restitution to victims who purchased vehicles without knowing the odometers displayed incorrect mileages.<\/p>\n<p>Levy also duped his employer, <strong>Galpin Ford in North Hills, California<\/strong>, about his odometer scam.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2014, Levy pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to tamper with odometers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA car salesman should know better than anyone that odometer tampering is a fraud and a crime,\u201d said <strong>Acting Assistant Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer.<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cAs this prosecution demonstrates, criminals with an electronic tool can easily alter electronic vehicle odometers, defrauding future car buyers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Levy was a salesman at Galpin Ford in North Hills, California.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In his guilty plea, Levy admitted the following facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He referred customers and friends to his co-conspirator,<strong> Shamai Salpeter,<\/strong> who rolled back odometers in the driveway of his residence in Woodland Hills.<\/li>\n<li>Salpeter was also charged and pleaded guilty to odometer tampering and conspiracy to commit odometer fraud and is scheduled to be sentenced on April 13.<\/li>\n<li>Levy knew that some of his customers had exceeded the maximum allowed mileage under the terms of their leases and wished to avoid fees and penalties.<\/li>\n<li>He knew that other customers wanted to lower the mileage on their odometers to make their vehicles more valuable when they traded in the vehicles.<\/li>\n<li>After Salpeter altered the odometers, Levy\u2019s customers returned or traded in their vehicles with false, lower mileage readings.<\/li>\n<li>Levy accepted the vehicles without alerting Galpin Ford that the odometer readings were false.<\/li>\n<li>Future purchasers of the vehicles were defrauded because they purchased vehicles with false odometer readings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Galpin Ford cooperated with the government\u2019s investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTampering with odometers is a crime that puts consumers\u2019 lives and wallets at risk,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Administrator Mark Rosekind of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u201cNot only do purchasers end up paying more for used cars, but rolling back the mileage on odometers hides necessary information that could ultimately affect a car\u2019s safety and the costs of future repairs to consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA<\/strong> estimates that odometer fraud in the United States results in consumer losses of more than $1 billion annually and has established a special hotline to handle odometer fraud complaints.<\/p>\n<p>Individuals who have information relating to odometer tampering should call (800) 424-9393 or (202) 366-4761.<\/p>\n<p>More information on
