{"id":10105,"date":"2015-03-17T13:46:57","date_gmt":"2015-03-17T20:46:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=10105"},"modified":"2015-03-17T13:46:57","modified_gmt":"2015-03-17T20:46:57","slug":"u-s-air-force-veteran-charged-in-a-bizarre-plan-to-join-the-terrorist-group-isil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=10105","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Air Force Veteran Charged in a Bizarre Plan to Join the Terrorist Group ISIL"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_10109\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10109\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Pugh-FaceBook-Photo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10109 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Pugh-FaceBook-Photo-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Pugh FaceBook Photo\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10109\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tairod Nathan Webster Pugh (FaceBook Photograph)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>NEW YORK<\/strong> &#8211; A U.S. Air Force veteran, <strong>Tairod Nathan Webster Pugh<\/strong>, who traveled from Egypt to Turkey to cross the border into Syria to join the terrorist group, ISIL, and fight in the jihad, was charged with helping a foreign terrorist group, \u00a0officials said today.<\/p>\n<p>Pugh, who was arrested Monday, is also charged with obstruction and attempted obstruction of justice, according to authorities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBorn and raised in the United States, Pugh allegedly turned his back on his country and attempted to travel to Syria in order to join a terrorist organization,\u201d said <strong>U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to vigorously prosecute extremists, whether based here or abroad, to stop them before they are able to threaten the United States and its allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs alleged, Pugh, an American citizen, was willing to travel overseas and fight jihad alongside terrorists seeking to do us harm,\u201d said <strong>Assistant Director in Charge Diego Rodriguez of the FBI&#8217;s New York Field Office.<\/strong> \u201cU.S. citizens who offer support to terrorist organizations pose a grave threat to our national security and will face serious consequences for their actions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"CNN Report on U.S. Vet Pugh Who Tried to Join ISIL\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/03\/17\/us\/former-airman-isis-charges\/\">CNN reports<\/a> that Pugh&#8217;s lawyer said his client plans to plead not guilty to the charges.<\/p>\n<p>The defendant will be arraigned \u00a0tomorrow, March 18 before <strong>U.S. District Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis<\/strong> of the Eastern District of New York.<\/p>\n<p>If convicted, Pugh is facing up to 35 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As alleged in the complaint, indictment and other court filings, these are the allegations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The defendant served in the <strong>Air Force as an avionics instrument system specialist<\/strong> and received training in the installation and maintenance of aircraft engine, navigation and weapons systems.<\/li>\n<li>After leaving the Air Force, the defendant worked for a<strong> number of companies in the United States and Middle East<\/strong> as an avionics specialist and airplane mechanic.<\/li>\n<li>The defendant lived abroad for over a year before his arrest in this case.<\/li>\n<li>Earlier this year, weeks after being fired from his last job as an airplane mechanic based in the Middle East, the defendant attempted to join ISIL.<\/li>\n<li>On Jan. 10, 2015, the defendant traveled from Egypt to Turkey in an effort to cross the border into Syria to join ISIL and fight violent jihad.<\/li>\n<li>Turkish authorities denied the defendant entry, however, and sent him on a return flight to Egypt.<\/li>\n<li>Upon his arrival in Egypt, the defendant was carrying multiple electronic devices, including four USB thumb drives that had been stripped of their plastic casings and an iPod that had been wiped clean of data.<\/li>\n<li>The defendant also had a cellular telephone that contained, among other things, a photograph of a machine gun.<\/li>\n<li>The defendant was deported to the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On Jan. 14, 2015, the FBI\u2019s Joint Terrorism Task Force or JTTF &#8211; \u00a0which comprises a large number of federal, state, and local agencies from the region &#8211; agents obtained a search warrant for the defendant\u2019s electronic devices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Among the things discovered by authorities in his laptop computer, among other things, include the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Recent internet searches for \u201cborders controlled by Islamic state\u201d,<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Recent internet searches for \u201cwho controls kobani,\u201d \u201ckobani border crossing,\u201d and \u201cjarablus border crossing,\u201d all references to Syrian cities unde<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">r ISIL\u2019s control near the Turkish border,<\/span><\/li>\n<li>A chart of crossing points between Turkey and Syria indicating the areas on the Syrian side of the border controlled by ISIL and other groups<\/li>\n<li>Internet searches for \u201cFlames of War,\u201d an ISIL propaganda video, as well as downloaded videos, including one showing ISIL members executing prisoners.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>The defendant was arrested on Monday in Asbury Park, New Jersey.
