{"id":10888,"date":"2015-04-08T18:05:19","date_gmt":"2015-04-09T01:05:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=10888"},"modified":"2015-04-08T19:24:28","modified_gmt":"2015-04-09T02:24:28","slug":"u-s-wants-to-extradite-former-salvadoran-military-officer-for-jesuit-massacre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=10888","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Wants to Extradite Former Salvadoran Military Officer for Jesuit Massacre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/usdojseal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-7674\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/usdojseal-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"usdojseal\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>NORTH CAROLINA<\/strong> \u00a0&#8211; The U.S. wants to extradite a former\u00a0Salvadoran military officer to Spain to face charges for participating in the 1989 massacre of \u00a0six Jesuit priests in El Salvador during the 10-year civil conflict, officials.<\/p>\n<p>The Jesuit priests&#8217; housekeeper and the housekeeper\u2019s 16-year old daughter were also killed, according to authorities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inocente Orlando Montano Morales<\/strong>, 72, formerly of Everett, Massachusetts, and 19 other former Salvadoran military officials \u00a0were indicted in Spain<\/p>\n<p><strong>According to allegations in the<a title=\"Criminal Complaint\" href=\"http:\/\/www.justice.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/opa\/press-releases\/attachments\/2015\/04\/08\/montano_morales_complaint.pdf\"> complaint f<\/a>iled in U.S. District Court Wednesday, these are the facts and circumstances surrounding this case:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Between 1980 and 1991, El Salvador was engulfed in a civil conflict between the military-led government and the <strong>Farabundo Mart\u00ed National Liberation Front<\/strong> or FMLN.<\/p>\n<p>During this conflict, in the early morning hours of Nov. 16, 1989, members of the Salvadoran military allegedly murdered six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and the housekeeper\u2019s 16-year old daughter at the Universidad Centroamericana.<\/p>\n<p>Five of the Jesuit priests were Spanish nationals, and the remaining victims were from El Salvador.<\/p>\n<p>The Jesuit priests were allegedly advocates for discussions between the FMLN and the military-led government to end the strife.<\/p>\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p>At the time, Montano Morales was a colonel in the Salvadoran army, and he also served as Vice Minister of Defense and Public Safety.<\/p>\n<p>The complaint alleges that he shared oversight responsibility over a government radio station that, days before the massacre, issued threats urging the murder of the Jesuit priests.<\/p>\n<p>The day before the murders, Montano Morales also allegedly participated in a series of meetings during which one of his fellow officers gave the order to kill the leader of the Jesuits and leave no witnesses.<\/p>\n<p>The following day, members of the Salvadoran army allegedly executed the six priests, their housekeeper and the housekeeper\u2019s daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Days earlier, the Farabundo Mart\u00ed National Liberation Front (FMLN) had launched a major offensive against the military in San Salvador. Father Ignacio Ellacur\u00eda had tried to negotiate a peace deal involving the ouster of top military officers.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Huffington Post Story on Jesuit Slayings\" href=\"http:\/\/100r.org\/2013\/10\/catching-up-with-the-past-justice-and-the-jesuit-murders-in-el-salvador\/\">The Huffington Post<\/a> reported that Fathers Ignacio Ellacur\u00eda, Ignacio Mart\u00edn-Bar\u00f3, Segundo Montes, Juan Ram\u00f3n Moreno and Amando L\u00f3pez were led in pajamas to their outdoor courtyard and told to lie in the grass. As Martha Doggett recounted in her book, \u201cDeath Foretold: The Jesuit Murders in El Salvador,\u201d a neighbor reportedly heard the priests murmuring prayers in unison before they were shot.<\/p>\n<p>Indoors, soldiers shot Father Joaqu\u00edn L\u00f3pez y L\u00f3pez, along with the priests\u2019 housekeeper, Elba Ramos, and her 16-year-old daughter Celina. Soldiers later testified they returned to fire again at the two women who were moaning and embracing on the floor, the Huffington Post reported.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, battalion members fired an anti-tank rocket and grenades and shot bullets into the pastoral center. They spray-painted slogans onto the walls of the gate in an attempt to implicate the country\u2019s leftist guerillas: \u201cThe FMLN executed the enemy spies. Victory or Death, FMLN, \u201d the Huffington Post reported.<\/p>\n<p>Montano Morales is currently serving a 21-month federal prison sentence in the United States for his 2013 conviction in Massachusetts for immigration fraud and perjury in connection with false statements he made to immigration authorities to remain in the U.S., authorities stated.<\/p>\n<p>He will be released from that
