{"id":12318,"date":"2015-05-26T14:58:18","date_gmt":"2015-05-26T21:58:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=12318"},"modified":"2015-05-26T14:58:18","modified_gmt":"2015-05-26T21:58:18","slug":"businessman-sentenced-to-seven-years-for-3-3-million-medicare-fraud-scheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=12318","title":{"rendered":"Businessman Sentenced to Seven Years for $3.3 Million Medicare Fraud Scheme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>LOS ANGELES<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/u.s.DISTRICT-COURT-CENTRAL-DISTRICT.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1648\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/u.s.DISTRICT-COURT-CENTRAL-DISTRICT-150x150.png\" alt=\"u.s.DISTRICT COURT CENTRAL DISTRICT\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>A federal judge on Tuesday sentenced the former owner of a Los Angeles-based medical supply company to seven years in prison for his role in a fraud scheme.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hakop Gambaryan\u00a0<\/strong>billed Medicare $3.3 million in fraudulent claims as a result of the scheme, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Gambaryan\u00a0was sentenced today to seven years in prison for his role in a fraud scheme that resulted in $3.3 million in fraudulent claims to Medicare.<\/p>\n<p>In March, a jury convicted Gambaryan, 55, of East Hollywood, California, of four counts of health care fraud, officials said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>U.S. District Court Judge Otis D. Wright II<\/strong> also ordered Gambaryan to pay $1.7 million as restitution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0The evidence showed the following during the trial:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Between March 2006 and December 2012, Gambaryan paid cash kickbacks to medical clinics for fraudulent prescriptions for durable medical equipment, which the patients did not need.<\/li>\n<li>Gambaryan then used these prescriptions to bill Medicare for the unnecessary equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Gambaryan personally delivered power wheelchairs to many beneficiaries who were able to walk without assistance.<\/li>\n<li>In one case, Gambaryan carried a power wheelchair up a flight of stairs for a woman who lived in a second floor apartment with no elevator.<\/li>\n<li>In another case, the power wheelchair would not fit inside the beneficiary\u2019s home, so Gambaryan put it in the beneficiary\u2019s garage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Gambaryan submitted false documents to support the fraudulent claims, including fake home assessments when no home assessments actually occurred, according to officials.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, officials said Gambaryan photocopied beneficiaries\u2019 signatures hundreds of times to create the appearance that the beneficiaries consented to ongoing equipment rentals, when they did not.<\/p>\n<p>At least two of the beneficiaries had passed away prior to the date they supposedly signed the rental agreements, according to authorities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LOS ANGELES A federal judge on Tuesday sentenced the former owner of a Los Angeles-based medical supply company to seven years in prison for his role in a fraud scheme.
