A federal jury on Wednesday found a 45-year-old man who sold a product called “Miracle Mineral Supplement” guilty of selling industrial bleach as a miracle cure for a number of diseases and illnesses, officials said.<\/p>\n

Louis Daniel Smith claimed that his product cured diseases and illnesses including cancer, AIDS, malaria, hepatitis, lyme disease, asthma and the common cold, the Department of Justice announced Thursday.<\/p>\n

After a seven-day trial, \u00a0the jury convicted Smith of conspiracy, smuggling, selling misbranded drugs and defrauding the United States, officials stated.<\/p>\n

Smith is facing up to 34 years in prison when he is sentenced on Sept. 9.<\/p>\n

This is what the evidence indicated at Smith’s trial:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Smith operated a business called \u201cProject GreenLife\u201d (PGL) from 2007 to 2011.\u00a0 PGL sold a product called \u201cMiracle Mineral Supplement,\u201d or MMS, over the Internet.<\/li>\n
  • MMS is a mixture of sodium chlorite and water.<\/li>\n
  • Sodium chlorite is an industrial chemical used as a pesticide and for hydraulic fracking and wastewater treatment.<\/li>\n
  • Sodium chlorite cannot be sold for human consumption and suppliers of the chemical include a warning sheet stating that it can cause potentially fatal side effects if swallowed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \u201cThis verdict demonstrates that the Department of Justice will prosecute those who sell dangerous chemicals as miracle cures to sick people and their desperate loved ones,\u201d said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer of the Justice Department\u2019s Civil Division<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u201cConsumers have the right to expect that the medicines that they purchase are safe and effective.\u201d\u00a0 Mizer thanked the jury for its service and its careful consideration of the evidence.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    The evidence also showed that\u00a0Smith instructed consumers to combine MMS with citric acid to create chlorine dioxide, add water and drink the resulting mixture to cure numerous illnesses.<\/p>\n

    Chlorine dioxide is a potent agent used to bleach textiles, among other industrial applications.<\/p>\n

    Chlorine dioxide is a severe respiratory and eye irritant that can cause nausea, diarrhea and dehydration.<\/p>\n

    According to the instructions for use that Smith provided with his product, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting were all signs that the miracle cure was working.<\/p>\n

    The instructions also stated that despite a risk of possible brain damage, the product might still be appropriate for pregnant women or infants who were seriously ill.<\/p>\n

    According to the evidence presented at trial, Smith created phony \u201cwater purification\u201d and \u201cwastewater treatment\u201d businesses in order to obtain sodium chlorite and ship his MMS without being detected by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or U.S. Customs and Border Protection.<\/p>\n

    The government stated that Smith hid evidence from FDA inspectors and destroyed evidence while law enforcement agents were executing search warrants on his residence and business.<\/p>\n

    Before trial, three of Smith\u2019s alleged co-conspirators, Chris Olson, Tammy Olson<\/strong> and Karis DeLong, Smith\u2019s<\/strong> wife, pleaded guilty to introducing misbranded drugs into interstate commerce.<\/p>\n

    Chris Olson, along with alleged co-conspirators Matthew Darjanny<\/strong> and Joseph Lachnit,<\/strong> testified at trial that Smith was the leader of PGL.<\/p>\n

    In all, the jury convicted Smith of one count of conspiracy to commit multiple crimes, three counts of introducing misbranded drugs into interstate commerce with intent to defraud or mislead and one count of fraudulently smuggling merchandise into the United States.<\/p>\n

    The jury found Smith not guilty on one out of four of the misbranded drug counts.<\/p>\n
