{"id":13247,"date":"2015-06-30T13:39:07","date_gmt":"2015-06-30T20:39:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=13247"},"modified":"2015-06-30T13:39:07","modified_gmt":"2015-06-30T20:39:07","slug":"29-year-old-man-pleads-guilty-to-hate-crime-assaulting-an-81-year-old-black-man-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=13247","title":{"rendered":"29-Year-Old Man Pleads Guilty to Hate Crime \u2014 Assaulting an 81-Year-Old Black Man (Video)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>TEXAS<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/U.S.-Southern-District-of-Texas.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-13249 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/U.S.-Southern-District-of-Texas.gif\" alt=\"U.S. Southern District of Texas\" width=\"224\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a>A 29-year-old man admitted that he attacked an 81-year-old black man because of the man&#8217;s race and color on Nov. 24, 2013, according to authorities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Defendant Conrad Alvin Barrett<\/strong>, of Katy, Texas, described the racially-motivated attack as a &#8220;knockout&#8221; and recorded himself on the cell phone attacking the elderly man, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Barrett will be sentenced in September and is facing up to 10 years in prison, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Barrett was charged with\u00a0violating the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. \u00a0On Nov. 24, 2013, he attacked the elderly African-American man because of the man\u2019s race and color in what Barrett called a \u201cknockout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the recording, Barrett questions whether there would be national attention if he attacked a person of color<\/p>\n<p>Officials said Barrett also claimed he would not hit \u201cdefenseless people\u201d just moments before punching the elderly man in the face and with such force that the victim immediately fell to the ground. \u00a0Barrett then laughed and said \u201cknockout,\u201d as he ran to his vehicle and fled. \u00a0The victim suffered two jaw fractures and was hospitalized for several days as a result of the attack.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis was a senseless and heinous act of violence that was committed simply because the victim was African American,\u201d said <strong>Deputy Assistant Attorney Genera Vanita Gupta.\u00a0<\/strong> \u201cThe Department of Justice will continue to use every tool in our arsenal to vindicate the rights of victims of violent crimes.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><script src=\"http:\/\/video.foxnews.com\/v\/embed.js?id=2980081343001&amp;w=466&amp;h=263\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><noscript>Watch the latest video at <a href=\"http:\/\/video.foxnews.com\">video.foxnews.com<\/a><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act was passed on Oct. 22, 2009, and signed into law by President Barack Obama six days later. \u00a0Shepard was a gay student who was tortured and murdered in 1998 near Laramie, Wyoming. \u00a0 Byrd was an African-American man who was tied to a truck by two white supremacists, dragged behind it and decapitated in Jasper, Texas, in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TEXAS A 29-year-old man admitted that he attacked an 81-year-old black man because of the man&#8217;s race and color on Nov. 24, 2013, according to authorities.
