\"FBI<\/a>A judge sentenced a Genovese crime family captain to two years and three months in prison for his leadership role in the mafia criminal organization.<\/p>\n

Daniel Pagano<\/strong>, 61, plead guilty to racketeering conspiracy in March, officials said.<\/p>\n

U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams<\/strong> sentenced Pagano on Friday.<\/p>\n

In addition to the prison term, Judge Abrams ordered Pagano, of Rockland County, to pay a fine of $5,000 and forfeiture of $2,000.<\/p>\n

\u201cDanny Pagano, a Captain in the Genovese Crime Family, has been sentenced today for his leadership role in a racketeering conspiracy. Pagano\u2019s conviction and sentence reinforce a simple truth: if you join the mob and choose a life of crime, you end up behind bars,\u201d said Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to the Indictment and other documents filed in this case, and statements made during the plea and sentencing proceedings:<\/p>\n

The Genovese Crime Family<\/strong> is part of a nationwide criminal organization known by various names, including the \u201cMafia\u201d and \u201cLa Cosa Nostra\u201d (\u201cLCN\u201d), which operates through entities known as \u201cFamilies.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Genovese Crime Family operates through groups of individuals known as \u201ccrews\u201d and \u201cregimes,\u201d most of which are based in New York City. Each \u201ccrew\u201d has as its leader a person known as a \u201cCaporegime,\u201d \u201cCapo,\u201d \u201cCaptain,\u201d or \u201cSkipper,\u201d who is responsible for supervising the criminal activities of his crew and providing \u201cSoldiers\u201d and associates with support and protection, according to authorities.<\/p>\n

In return, authorities said the Capo typically receives a share of the illegal earnings of each of his crew\u2019s Soldiers and associates, which is sometimes referred to as “tribute.”<\/p>\n

Each crew consists of \u201cmade\u201d members, sometimes known as \u201cSoldiers,\u201d \u201cwiseguys,\u201d \u201cfriends of ours,\u201d and \u201cgood fellows.\u201d<\/p>\n

Soldiers are aided in their criminal endeavors by other trusted individuals, known as \u201cassociates,\u201d who sometimes are referred to as \u201cconnected\u201d or identified as \u201cwith\u201d a Soldier or other member of the Family, officials said.<\/p>\n

Associates participate in the various activities of the crew and its members.<\/p>\n

In order for an associate to become a made member of the Family, the associate must first be of Italian descent and typically needed to demonstrate the ability to generate income for the Family and\/or the willingness to commit acts of violence, according to officials.<\/p>\n

From 2009 through August 2014, \u00a0officials said Pagano along with other members and associates of the Genovese Crime Family, committed a wide array of crimes including operating an illegal gambling business.<\/p>\n
