{"id":16396,"date":"2015-10-10T21:18:20","date_gmt":"2015-10-11T04:18:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=16396"},"modified":"2015-10-10T21:19:47","modified_gmt":"2015-10-11T04:19:47","slug":"prisoner-who-escaped-while-being-treated-at-a-hospital-sentenced-to-32-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=16396","title":{"rendered":"Prisoner Who Escaped While Being Treated at a Hospital Sentenced to 32 Years  (News Video)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>ALEXANDRIA, VA<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A federal judge on Friday sentenced\u00a0<strong>Wossen Assaye\u00a0<\/strong>to 32 years in prison for two counts of using, carrying, and brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, authorities announced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Both counts based on his armed assaults of two security guards during his March 31 escape from <strong>Inova Fairfax Hospital,\u00a0<\/strong>officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Assaye, of Arlington, was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount $34,870 for the 12 bank robberies, and was ordered to undergo drug testing and treatment in addition to a mental health evaluation and treatment, officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Assaye, 43, pleaded guilty on July 23.<\/span><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8qsMt_KjtCg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">According to court documents, Assaye accepted responsibility for not only the firearms offenses, but also additional crimes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Prosecutors said Assaye robbed various banks in Northern Virginia on 11 occasions beginning October 2013 until March 2015. \u00a0In two of the robberies, he was armed. He escaped on a bicycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In another instance, Assaye entered a bank with the intent to commit bank robbery and larceny.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">After being arrested for his crimes, Assaye escaped from federal custody while at a Virginia hospital for treatment, according to officials<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">During the course of his escape, officials said Assaye assaulted a security guard, overpowered her, and took her firearm. He then pointed the firearm at a second guard before pulling the first guard down the hospital hallway at gunpoint and fleeing the hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Dressed in a hospital gown and wearing no shoes, Assaye ran to to a nearby apartment complex where he hid in the trunk of a Toyota Camry for several hours. While the car owner was driving to work, he kicked through the back seat from the trunk and eventually stole the car,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/wtop.com\/fairfax-county\/2015\/05\/prisoner-who-escaped-from-va-hospital-indicted-on-gun-kidnapping-counts\/\">Washington&#8217;s Top News reported<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The news report stated that police arrested Assaye in the area of Minnesota Avenue and 25th Street SE after a nine-hour manhunt.
