{"id":18248,"date":"2015-12-14T17:25:45","date_gmt":"2015-12-15T01:25:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=18248"},"modified":"2015-12-14T17:29:19","modified_gmt":"2015-12-15T01:29:19","slug":"34-people-facing-methamphetamine-trafficking-charges-indian-reservation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=18248","title":{"rendered":"34 People Facing Drug Trafficking Charges at Indian Reservation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NEW MEXICO<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Mescalero-Indian-Tribe.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18253 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Mescalero-Indian-Tribe-300x255.png\" alt=\"Mescalero Indian Tribe\" width=\"300\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Mescalero-Indian-Tribe-300x255.png 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Mescalero-Indian-Tribe.png 422w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>After an 18-month investigation, law enforcement charged 34 people with methamphetamine trafficking on the<strong> Mescalero Apache Reservation<\/strong>, officials announced today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">More than 22 pounds of methamphetamine were seized during the course of the investigation, officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">An investigation began in May 2014 in response to an increase in violent crime by methamphetamine users on the Mescalero Apache Reservation, officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The investigation initially targeted a drug trafficking organization allegedly led by<strong> Lorenzo Saenz,<\/strong> a member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, which distributed methamphetamine within the Reservation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It later expanded to include two other drug trafficking organizations in southern New Mexico that allegedly served as sources of supply for the methamphetamine distributed within the reservation, officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This investigation by<strong> Justice Department\u2019s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force<\/strong> is the first time the Task Force used electronic wiretaps in Indian Country, officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cMethamphetamine has a disproportionate devastating impact on tribal communities, accounting for up to 40 percent of violent crime on reservations,\u201d said <strong>U.S. Attorney Damon P. Martinez of the District of New Mexico<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u201cThis investigation is an example of the Justice Department\u2019s commitment to working with Tribal Governments to improve the safety of Native communities and increase awareness of the dangers of methamphetamine use.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>President Danny Breuninger of the Mescalero Apache Tribe<\/strong> said: \u201cBefore and since taking Office as the President of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, I heard complaints from our Tribal Members and saw the pain and suffering caused by illegal\u00a0drug use and sales\u00a0on our Reservation.\u00a0 Many of our young people\u00a0are being poisoned by methamphetamine and lives are being shattered by senseless drug-related injuries and deaths.\u00a0 As the leader of my Tribe, it is my job to do all I can to preserve the safety and\u00a0welfare of our people and to preserve our culture, traditions and customs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Adding, &#8220;The great majority of our Tribal Members are great people who work hard every day to support their families and raise their children\u00a0with the values and traditions that have been passed down generation after generation.\u00a0 But continuing to do this is very hard when our Tribal Members\u2019\u00a0lives are being torn apart by illegal drug use.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The defendants are presumed innocent until proven
