{"id":18998,"date":"2016-01-05T11:06:13","date_gmt":"2016-01-05T19:06:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=18998"},"modified":"2016-01-05T11:06:13","modified_gmt":"2016-01-05T19:06:13","slug":"canadian-resident-who-illegally-got-3-million-in-tax-refunds-sentenced-to-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=18998","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Involved in Illegally Filing Millions of Dollars in Tax Returns Sentenced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NEW YORK<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/LADYJUSTICE.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1537 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/LADYJUSTICE.jpg\" alt=\"LADYJUSTICE\" width=\"274\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a>A federal judge sentenced a Canadian citizen to 11 years and three months in prison for his role in submitting phony tax returns to the IRS, according to officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A jury convicted <strong>Kevin Cyster<\/strong>, 52, of Burlington, Ontario, in September \u00a0after a six-day trial in Rochester, New York.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">According to court documents and testimony at trial, Cyster was part of a group of Canadian citizens that filed nearly $10 million in tax returns with the IRS and received $3.5 million in refunds before the tax fraud scheme was detected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>U.S. District Judge Frank P. Geraci, Jr<\/strong>. of New York, on Monday also ordered that Cyster \u00a0pay \u00a0$3.5 million as restitution to the IRS, officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Cyster was conviction for one count of conspiracy to defraud and commit theft of government funds, one count of making a false claim and two counts of transferring stolen money in foreign commerce, federal officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0On these tax returns, officials said Cyster and his co-conspirators falsely claimed that nearly $10 million in federal income taxes had been withheld on their behalf by various Canadian financial institutions and paid over to the IRS.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The testimony at trial established that these false tax forms were created and filed with the IRS by Californian <strong>Ronald Brekke<\/strong>, 55, of Orange County, California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong> Renee Jarvis<\/strong>, 51, of Ontario one of Cyster\u2019s co-conspirators, testified that co-conspirators held meetings at Cyster\u2019s home at which Cyster promoted the 1099-OID scheme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Jarvis plead guilty in June 2014 to conspiracy to defraud the United States and to commit theft of government funds.\u00a0 Her sentencing is set for next week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Brekke was sentenced in June 2012 to 12 years in prison after a jury convicted him of promoting a tax fraud scheme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEW YORK A federal judge sentenced a Canadian citizen to 11 years and three months in prison for his role in submitting phony tax returns to the IRS, according to officials.
