{"id":19329,"date":"2016-01-13T18:53:15","date_gmt":"2016-01-14T02:53:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=19329"},"modified":"2016-01-13T18:55:13","modified_gmt":"2016-01-14T02:55:13","slug":"federal-prison-guards-admit-beating-inmate-lying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=19329","title":{"rendered":"Federal Prison Guards Admit Beating an Inmate and Lying About the Incident"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>FLORIDA<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12913 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Federal-Prison-Coleman-Florida-300x148.jpg\" alt=\"Federal Prison Coleman Florida\" width=\"300\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Federal-Prison-Coleman-Florida-300x148.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Federal-Prison-Coleman-Florida.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Federal officials announced today that two U.S. Bureau of Prisons Correction Officers \u2014<strong>William Houghton<\/strong>, 32, and <strong>Eddie Rodas-Castro<\/strong>, 32, \u00a0\u2014 plead guilty in connection with the beating of an inmate and then, lying about the incident.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Houghton pleaded guilty to violating the civil rights of an inmate inside the <strong>Coleman Correctional Facility in Coleman, Florida<\/strong>, by striking the inmate repeatedly in the head and face on March 22, 2014.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Houghton also plead guilty to submitting two false reports in connection with the incident, falsely stating the inmate had attempted to assault him and omitting the fact that Houghton had repeatedly punched the inmate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Rodas-Castro pleaded guilty to one count of falsifying official reports, for his role in submitting a false report in an effort to cover up Houghton\u2019s abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cConduct by corrections officers who abuse their power to violate the civil rights of those in their custody and lie about their actions undermines our criminal justice system,\u201d said <strong>Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta, head of the Justice Department\u2019s Civil Rights Division.<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cThe Justice Department is committed to holding officers who engage in such criminal acts accountable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The defendants were both indicted on June 17.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> Sentencing for both defendants will be scheduled at a later date.\u00a0 Houghton faces a maximum sentence of three years in federal prison.\u00a0 Rodas-Castro faces a maximum sentence of one year in federal prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The FBI investigated this case.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FLORIDA &nbsp;
