Where rage and revenge run rampant.&#8221;<\/em> \u00a0\u2014 <strong>&#8220;Stepping on the Devil&#8217;s Tail,<\/strong> a novel.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Sean Penn and His Chapo Interview<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sean Penn is a Hollywood trained monkey who believes he is the characters on the Hollywood scripts that are handed to him to read.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19425 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Sean-Penn.jpg\" alt=\"Sean Penn\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Sean-Penn.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Sean-Penn-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Unfortunately, many people also believe that actors like Penn are the characters who they go to see in the movies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It seems that Penn just woke up and realized that there are terrorists and other violent and vicious criminals who aren&#8217;t reading the same movie scripts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Penn probably thought that he would make the talk shows and bathe in the limelight of landing the El Chapo interview without hearing from the Sinaloa Drug Cartel&#8217;s lawyer or Chapo&#8217;s henchmen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">That goes with the territory of being a journalist and interviewing or reporting about dangerous people or dangerous groups in certain countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19406\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19406\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19406 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Daniel-Pearl-Journalist.jpg\" alt=\"Daniel Pearl Journalist\" width=\"200\" height=\"217\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19406\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daniel Pearl<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In the real world, there have been many journalists who were killed \u00a0just doing their jobs like James Foley and Daniel Pearl.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Foley, who was beheaded in the Middle East by ISIS, was one of these courageous reporters. Pearl, a Wall Street Journal reporter, was kidnapped and killed while doing a report about al-Qaeda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">There have been many, many other journalists throughout the world who have died doing their jobs.<\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19399 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/CPJ-Committe-to-Protect-Journalists-logo.gif\" alt=\"CPJ-Committe-to-Protect-Journalists-logo\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Among the most dangerous countries for a journalist to work, Mexico ranked number eighth last year, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/CPJ-Committe-to-Protect-Journalists-logo\"><strong>Committee to Protect Journalists<\/strong>.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A good \u00a0friend, <strong>Alfredo Corchado<\/strong>, works as a reporter for the Dallas Morning News. He was been assigned to \u00a0Mexico City Bureau for many years, and one day, learned about a death threat from the Zeta Cartel goons. \u00a0It got ugly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Alfredo began working in El Paso for the Herald-Post straight out of journalism school. That&#8217;s where we met. He is a tough, dedicated and talented journalist. Who soon went to work at the Wall Street Journal after he left the Herald-Post. \u00a0He said he &#8220;blamed the Herald-Post for infecting him with the incurable disease of journalism.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Alfredo&#8217;s book, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Midnight-Mexico-Reporters-Countrys-Darkness-ebook\/dp\/B00AFPTSM6\/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;qid=&amp;sr=\">Midnight in Mexico \u2014 A Reporter&#8217;s Journey Through a Country&#8217;s Descent into Darkness<\/a>,&#8221; is about his experiences in writing about the drug trade in Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I will not question whether Actor Sean Penn is a journalist. It&#8217;s not my place to do so. Besides, I know so-called journalists who are just great actors and drama queens, very little beyond that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Penn, through a connection with a Mexican actress, was able to score a journalistic coup by interviewing the richest, most powerful and violent drug lord on the planet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Good for him. He beat the New York Times&#8217; and L.A. Times&#8217; reporters, the Washington Post and other media heavyweights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The New York Times has an excellent story titled,<a href=\"http:\/\/How%20El Chapo Was Finally Captured, Again\"> &#8220;How El Chapo Was Finally Captured, Again&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0about the drug lord.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Chapo and Trump<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This is interesting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Shortly after <strong>\u00a0Donald Trump<\/strong> insulted Chapo and Chapo threatened Trump, there were no further remarks or comments from the vociferous Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I believed Trump talked to the DEA or FBI or both who told him to STFU. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Even after El Chapo was recaptured, Trump didn&#8217;t say a word about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Penn should have done likewise and simply said: \u00a0&#8220;I stand by my report for <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/features\/el-chapo-speaks-20160109\">Rolling Stone magazine.&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Instead, he went on 60 Minutes and is now a big part of the story. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Listen carefully to his voice during a portion of the interview. \u00a0It sounds fearful when he talks about the consequences of interviewing the head of a cartel that has been responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of people, including women and children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b4S3bX3N9KI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I don&#8217;t believe Penn is in any danger because if anything happens to him, there will be a swift and dramatic backlash from the American people and throughout the world calling for the heads of cartel leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The cartels are vicious but they are calculating and greedy. Killing Penn would seriously disrupt the drug trade throughout the world. \u00a0People would demand that law enforcement crackdown and demand that the drug smugglers be stopped on the borders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The cartels would be lucky if they are able to hide a balloon of cocaine up someone&#8217;s keister to get it across the border.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I could be wrong. But this is why I believe I am correct.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">There are many American journalists who cover Mexico. The journalists and editors killed in Mexico were Mexicans who were covering the drug trade. The cartels realize\u00a0that\u00a0there will be a very heavy price to pay for killing an American journalist for doing his or her job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Donald Trump Vs. Ted Cruz<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">America&#8217;s political Frankenstein, the monster created by Fox and the GOP, has unlocked America&#8217;s insane asylum, organized the inmates and is now thinking about burning down the town and taking no political prisoners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">That has frightened many Republicans. Trump has become their runaway political freight train with no end in sight. He is doing serious damage to the GOP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">His political nemesis<\/span>,\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Ted Cruz<\/strong>, is an opportunist who has hoodwinked many evangelists into supporting him by sprinkling Bible passages into his political speeches. He is able to sneak in scripture into his campaign scripts but has a very short memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Cruz is\u00a0now being nailed because he said he &#8220;forgot&#8221; to include two campaign loans in 2012 totaling $2 million when he ran for senator in Texas, according to the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/16\/us\/politics\/ted-cruz-failed-to-report-a-second-campaign-loan-in-2012.html?_r=0\"> New York Times.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Also Trump just unleashed birther accusations against Cruz.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The debate between<strong> Donald Trump<\/strong>\u00a0and Cruz has become a political food fight on whether Cruz is a U.S. citizen and qualified to run for president. It&#8217;s another issue that the GOP has had to add to its meaningless and fact-free political drivel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Between taking jabs at Obama, Trump and Cruz are trading insignificant &#8220;taste great, less filling&#8221; and &#8220;I know you are but what am I?&#8221; political punches at each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But, hey, it&#8217;s good for TV ratings and late-night comedy material.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>California Drought<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The rest of California is being hosed down by El Nino but for some reason, the rains have had little impact, so far, on Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Most of the rain has been falling in northern California. L.A., however, has been hit hard by El Nino, resulting in major flooding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19419 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/share61-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"share61 (1)\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/share61-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/share61-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/share61-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/share61-1.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I noticed the devastating toll the drought had on the mountains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I hadn&#8217;t gone up to the mountain for several weeks. I go up to sit on the top of a mountain, wait and watch the sun lift itself up from behind the peaks \u2014 it&#8217;s beautiful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">More than five years ago, Steve invited me to do the runs up the mountains. He goes to the same gym I do. He invites others to do the run. Some go for a few weeks but quit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It was brutal trying to keep up with Steve. I grumbled and bitched a lot. But after a few sunrises, I got addicted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Steve runs up almost effortlessly, and I tried to keep up with him on Saturdays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">More than a year ago, however, I decided to run and walk up to the top of a mountain to try and beat the sunrise. Now, it&#8217;s just a brisk walk going up and a fast pace running down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I can&#8217;t keep up with Steve anymore so I go alone. It&#8217;s peaceful and serenity massages the mind, and it&#8217;s just you, the birds and God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Yesterday, I noticed what a lack of\u00a0water will do to the beauty of a mountain \u2014 a lot more dead <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19423 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160116_065842-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"20160116_065842\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160116_065842-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160116_065842-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160116_065842-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>trees, and the landscape it is very gray, very dry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It was sad because a few of the mammoth trees along way were down. One had toppled over, and others had been cut down for safety reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Trees are dying throughout California by the millions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;<strong>Drought kills 12 million trees in California&#8217;s national forests,&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-ln-trees-dying-california-drought-20150505-story.html\">May 5, 2015 Los Angeles Times article<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The clouds come to Santa Barbara and Ventura counties and they seem to tease those below. They whisk by and drop a few sprinkles along the way, only a handful of downpours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Nothing more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Hopefully<b>,\u00a0<\/b>El Nino will pour a lot of wet stuff \u00a0on Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. It&#8217;s badly needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The weather forecast calls for rain on Monday, Tuesday and Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I hope the rains return with a vengeance, and the incredible beauty of the mountains quickly returns.
