{"id":1948,"date":"2014-03-25T16:28:20","date_gmt":"2014-03-25T23:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=1948"},"modified":"2014-03-27T05:00:27","modified_gmt":"2014-03-27T12:00:27","slug":"man-beat-black-woman-white-man-racially-motivated-attack-sentenced-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=1948","title":{"rendered":"Man Who Beat a Black Woman and a White Man in a Racially Motivated Attack Sentenced to Prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>CALIFORNIA<\/strong> &#8212; \u00a0A man who kicked a black woman in the chest and assaulted a white man at a convenience store in Marysville in a racially motivated hate attack was sentenced to more than seven years in prison, federal officials said.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">During the sentencing hearing today, Judge John A. \u00a0Mendez considered 30-year-old <strong>Billy James Hammett\u2019s<\/strong> background and criminal history, which includes a second racially motivated conviction in 2006 for assaulting a 72-year-old black man after making racial comments to the victim, authorities said. The attack also occurred in Marysville.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Officials \u00a0said Hammett pleaded guilty on Dec. 17, 2013, and his co-defendants, <strong>Perry Sylvester Jackson<\/strong>, 28, and <strong>Anthony Merrell Tyler<\/strong>, 33, have also pleaded guilty to racially motivated hate crimes. They are awaiting sentencing.<\/p>\n<p>In sentencing the defendant to seven years and three months, Judge Mendez said he found surveillance video footage of the assault \u201cdisturbing.\u201d He noted that Hammett\u2019s attack on the victims was \u201cunprovoked and unwarranted,\u201d and that the victims continue to suffer, according to officials.<\/p>\n<p>According to court documents, about \u00a010:45 p.m. on April 18, 2011, a white man and an African-American woman parked their car at a convenience store in Marysville.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly afterward, the three defendants, each of whom has white supremacist tattoos, attacked the man and woman because of their race. After calling the male victim a \u201c[racial slur]-lover,\u201d Jackson punched him twice in the head through the open passenger window. At the same time, Hammett kicked the woman in the chest, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>A few seconds later, \u00a0officials said Tyler smashed the car\u2019s windshield with a crowbar.<\/p>\n<p>As the attack continued, authorities said the woman managed to take refuge inside the convenience store. All three assailants then descended upon the male victim and began attacking him in the parking lot. He sustained abrasions on his right forearm and knees, while the woman suffered bruising to her chest.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the incident, Tyler used a racial slur to refer to a black witness.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0Authorities said Hammett has been affiliated with a number of white supremacist gangs, including Supreme White Power. \u00a0He has tattoos of the words \u201cwhite power\u201d across his abdomen, a large swastika on the right side of his torso and the word \u201cskinhead\u201d written across the top of his back. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Judge Mendez said during the sentencing hearing that Hammett poses \u201ca serious threat to the
