{"id":19753,"date":"2016-01-25T18:41:22","date_gmt":"2016-01-26T02:41:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=19753"},"modified":"2016-01-25T18:41:22","modified_gmt":"2016-01-26T02:41:22","slug":"next-time-youre-dead-defendant-sent-prison-threatening-federal-agent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=19753","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Next Time You&#8217;re Dead&#8221; Defendant Sent to Prison for Threatening Federal Agent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1958 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/U.S.-Fish-and-Wildlife-Service-252x300.gif\" alt=\"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\" width=\"252\" height=\"300\" \/>LOS ANGELES<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A federal judge sentenced a man who threatened to kill a <strong>U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement<\/strong>\u00a0 officer who came to the man\u2019s home to ask about trash dumped in the <strong>San Bernardino National Forest\u00a0<\/strong>to 18 months in jail, according to officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Richard Latka<\/strong>, 57, of Hemet, was convicted Thursday in federal court of threatening a federal agent,\u00a0officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThis federal law enforcement officer faced serious threats of assault and murder. The officer did everything he could to de-escalate the situation,\u201d said <strong>U.S. Attorney Eileen M. Decker.<\/strong> \u201cInstead of de-escalating, Mr. Latka made repeated threats to harm the officer, who was acting both lawfully and prudently. As a result of his dangerous conduct, his unwillingness to comply with law enforcement, and his failure to accept responsibility for his crime, Mr. Latka has earned this prison term.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">According to officials, this is the evidence against Latka:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Forest Service Officer went to a residence in Hemet in October 2014 to investigate trash that had recently been dumped in the nearby national forest.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The officer encountered Latka in the front yard of the residence, and Latka reacted angrily when the officer said he wished to speak to \u201cMr. Morales\u201d without telling Latka why. Latka then ran toward the officer with clenched fists.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Believing that Latka intended to hit him, the officer drew his Taser gun.
