A federal jury deliberated for about three hours before finding Joseph Wayne Lynch II<\/strong> guilty of interfering with flight crew members and attendants.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lynch will be sentenced on May 16 and is facing up to 20 years in prison, according to officials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The evidence indicated that Lynch while on the flight was drunk, disruptive, loud, grabbed and kissed a flight attendant on the neck and threatened law enforcement officials.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lynch who was found guilty last week. He\u00a0is free on bond pending his sentencing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs everyone who flies on airliners knows, a drunk, abusive passenger acting out against other passengers and the flight crew is not merely an inconvenience, but a serious threat to the safety of everyone on the flight,\u201d said U.S. Attorney John Walsh.<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cThis sort of boorish, abusive and threatening behavior will not be tolerated by the flight crew (and fellow passengers) and constitutes a federal crime that we will prosecute forcefully to protect the flying public.\u00a0 May this case serve as a warning to others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The jury heard evidence and testimony that\u00a0on August 4th, 2015, Joseph Wayne Lynch boarded U.S. Airways Flight 580 from Philadelphia to Denver. <\/span><\/p>\n

Having missed his previous connection, the airline upgraded Lynch to first class to accommodate the inconvenience. \u00a0Because of his loud and odd behavior upon boarding, the lead flight attendant limited his alcohol intake.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

After the flight took off, he swapped seats to sit next to a young lady with whom he wanted to strike up a conversation.\u00a0 He became increasingly upset when the flight attendant denied him further alcoholic beverages, which made him disruptive and threatening.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

At numerous times during the flight the defendant also had inappropriate physical contact with the flight attendant, including placing his hand on the small of her back repeatedly, and finally grabbing her and kissing her neck.\u00a0 When instructed that his conduct was inappropriate, he then began a slew of profanities directed at flight attendants and passengers. <\/span><\/p>\n

Lynch was so loud that the plane\u2019s captain heard his rants in the cockpit \u2013 over radio traffic and despite noise cancelling headphones.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

The flight attendants got an ice hammer, a pot of hot coffee, plastic handcuffs and alerted two able-bodied passengers to assist in the event that Mr. Lynch got even further out of hand.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

When confronted, Lynch responded by repeatedly stating, \u201cLet\u2019s go!\u201d He then promised to bring the airline down.\u00a0 He also (falsely) claimed to be a former Green Beret \/ Special Forces, and he showed off his purported bullet wounds, along with a photo of his pot farm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Normally the first class section requires only one flight attendant, the evidence shows.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because of the defendant\u2019s misconduct, the evidence indicated that a second flight attendant was in the first class section for half the flight for safety reasons. \u00a0Lynch\u2019s continued escalation of threats and inappropriate behavior eventually led to the Captain temporarily turning over flying duties of the aircraft to the first officer, lock-down the cockpit, and notify the airline of the situation and request law enforcement be present at the gate upon arrival. <\/span><\/p>\n

When Denver Police officers arrived, and later an FBI Special Agent, Lynch redirected his threats and anger towards them, according to testimony and evidence during the trial.<\/span><\/p>\n
