Also Apple and the other defendants succeeded in substantially increasing the prices that consumers paid for e-books, according to authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cApple\u2019s liability for knowingly conspiring with book publishers to raise the prices of e-books is settled once and for all,\u201d said <strong>Assistant Attorney General Bill Baer of the Justice Department\u2019s Antitrust Division.\u00a0<\/strong> \u201cAnd consumers will be made whole.\u00a0 The outstanding work of the Department of Justice team \u2013 working with our steadfast state attorney general partners \u2013 exposed this cynical misconduct by Apple and its book publisher co-conspirators and ensured that justice was done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Supreme Court\u2019s decision triggers Apple\u2019s obligation to pay $400 million to e-book purchasers under Apple\u2019s July 2014 agreement to settle damages actions brought by the attorneys general of 33 states and territories and a private class of ebook purchasers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Most ebook purchasers will receive reimbursement for the higher prices Apple\u2019s conduct caused them to pay through automatic credits at their e-book retailers, according to officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">They will be able to apply these credits to future purchases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">With the $166 million previously paid by the conspiring publishers to settle claims against them, Apple\u2019s payment will bring to $566 million the amount repaid to e-book purchasers overcharged as a result of Apple\u2019s and the publishers\u2019 illegal conspiracy.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21095\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21095\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21095 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/U.S.-District-Judge-Denise-L.-Cote-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"U.S. District Judge Denise L. Cote<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">On April 11, 2012, officials said the department filed its civil antitrust lawsuit challenging Apple\u2019s orchestration of a price-fixing conspiracy with five e-book publishers: Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers L.L.C., Holtzbrinck Publishers LLC, Penguin Group Inc. and Simon &amp; Schuster Inc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The department reached settlements with the defendant publishers before trial and proceeded to trial against Apple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>\u00a0U.S. District Judge Denise L.
