A \u00a0jury found U.S. Air Force veteran, Tairod Nathan Webster Pugh<\/strong>, guilty of traveling from Egypt to Turkey to cross the border into Syria to join the terrorist group, ISIS, and fight in the jihad, officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Wednesday, the jury found Pugh, 48, of Neptune, New Jersey, guilty of attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and ISIS, a designated foreign terrorist organization, and obstructing an official proceeding, officials said.<\/span><\/div>\n

\u201cAs presented in trial, Tairod Nathan Webster Pugh was willing to become a martyr, using his U.S. military training as a weapon for ISIL,\u201d said Assistant Director in Charge Diego Rodriguez<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u201cInstead, found guilty of his crimes, he is facing a lengthy incarceration.\u00a0 We are pleased the jury found his actions confirmed his expressed desire to cause violence and destruction on behalf of this terrorist organization.\u00a0 The FBI\u2019s Joint Terrorism Task Forces continue to work globally with our partners to successfully stop such actions before they happen, keep communities safe and bring criminals to justice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Pugh is facing up to 35 years in prison Sentencing has not yet been scheduled, officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n

As alleged in the complaint, indictment and other court filings, these are the allegations:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • The defendant served in the Air Force as an avionics instrument system specialist\u00a0<\/strong>and received training in the installation and maintenance of aircraft engine, navigation and weapons systems.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • After leaving the Air Force, the defendant worked for a number of companies in the United States and Middle East<\/strong> as an avionics specialist and airplane mechanic.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • The defendant lived abroad for over a year before his arrest in this case.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Earlier this year, weeks after being fired from his last job as an airplane mechanic based in the Middle East, the defendant attempted to join ISIL.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • On Jan. 10, 2015, the defendant traveled from Egypt to Turkey in an effort to cross the border into Syria to join ISIL and fight violent jihad.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Turkish authorities denied the defendant entry, however, and sent him on a return flight to Egypt.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Upon his arrival in Egypt, the defendant was carrying multiple electronic devices, including four USB thumb drives that had been stripped of their plastic casings and an iPod that had been wiped clean of data.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • The defendant also had a cellular telephone that contained, among other things, a photograph of a machine gun.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • The defendant was deported to the United States.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    On Jan. 14, 2015, the FBI\u2019s Joint Terrorism Task Force or JTTF \u2013 \u00a0which comprises a large number of federal, state, and local agencies from the region \u2013 agents obtained a search warrant for the defendant\u2019s electronic devices.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Among the things discovered by authorities in his laptop computer, among other things, include the following:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Recent internet searches for \u201cborders controlled by Islamic state\u201d,<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Recent internet searches for \u201cwho controls kobani,\u201d \u201ckobani border crossing,\u201d and \u201cjarablus border crossing,\u201d all references to Syrian cities under ISIL\u2019s control near the Turkish border,<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. A chart of crossing points between Turkey and Syria indicating the areas on the Syrian side of the border controlled by ISIL and other groups<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. Internet searches for \u201cFlames of War,\u201d an ISIL propaganda video, as well as downloaded videos, including one showing ISIL members executing prisoners.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      The defendant was arrested on Monday in Asbury Park, New Jersey. He has been in custody ever since, officials said.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      After the defendant\u2019s arrest, \u00a0officials said Task Force agents got warrants to search two backpacks that the defendant had when he was overseas.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Agents recovered from the backpacks, among other things: two compasses, a solar-powered flashlight, a solar-powered power source, shards of broken USB thumb drives, a fatigue jacket and camping clothes.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
