A man who burned a cross next to a mail box and in front of an interracial couple’s house was sentenced to three years in prison, officials announced today.<\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. Judge Susan C. Bucklew<\/strong> sentence\u00a0Pascual “Pete” Carlos Pietri,<\/strong> 53, of Port Richey, Florida, to federal prison for his role in a 2012 cross burning, officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n

He pleaded guilty on June 30, 2015, to one count of conspiring with others to threaten, intimidate and interfere with an interracial couple\u2019s enjoyment of their housing rights.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThose who violently threaten others because of racial differences tear at the very fabric of our diverse American society,\u201d said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta, head of the Justice Department\u2019s Civil Rights Division.<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cThe laws that protect our society leave no place for hate crimes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCross burning remains a vicious symbol of hatred,\u201d said U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley III<\/strong>. \u00a0\u201cAll American families have the right to live where they choose, undisturbed by such racist threats. This prosecution sends a clear message that we will not tolerate hate crimes in our community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"CrossCourt evidence indicates that on\u00a0Oct. 31, 2012, Pietri was living with another individual on Seward Drive in Port Richey in a predominantly white community.\u00a0 After an interracial couple moved next door, Pietri heard other neighbors make racial slurs and derogatory statements about blacks in general, and specifically the victim.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Halloween night, Pietri attended a party at a neighbor\u2019s house, where several Seward Drive residents decided to burn a cross in the African-American man\u2019s yard to intimidate him.<\/span><\/p>\n

Using wood and tools from the host of the Halloween party, Pietri\u2019s co-conspirators constructed a wooden cross and obtained gasoline to pour on the cross.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pietri and a co-conspirator then carried the cross to the victims\u2019 front yard, leaned it against their mailbox and set the cross on fire.\u00a0 Pietri and the co-conspirators burned the cross in the victims\u2019 yard in an effort to intimidate the interracial couple.<\/span><\/p>\n
