\"Greenpeace<\/a>At least 267 different species are known to have suffered from\u00a0entanglement or ingestion of marine debris including seabirds,\u00a0turtles, seals, sea lions, whales and fish.<\/p>\n

The scale of contamination of the marine environment by\u00a0plastic debris is vast. It is found floating in all the world\u2019s\u00a0oceans, everywhere from polar regions to the equator.<\/p>\n

It has been estimated that around 80% of marine debris is from land-based sources and\u00a0the remaining 20% is from ocean based sources.<\/p>\n

The sources can be categorized into four\u00a0major groups:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Tourism related litter at the coast: this includes litter left by beach goers such
\nas food and beverage packaging, cigarettes and plastic beach toys.
\n\u2022 Sewage-related debris: this includes water from storm drains and combined sewer
\noverflows which discharge waste water directly into the sea or rivers during heavy
\nrainfall. These waste waters carry with them garbage such as street litter,
\ncondoms and syringes.
\n\u2022 Fishing related debris: this includes fishing lines and nets, fishing pots and
\nstrapping bands from bait boxes that are lost accidentally by commercial fishing
\nboats or are deliberately dumped into the ocean
\n\u2022 Wastes from ships and boats: this includes garbage which is accidentally or
\ndeliberately dumped overboard.<\/p>\n
