(File photos)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A Texas inmate who <a href=\"http:\/\/crimeblog.dallasnews.com\/2009\/10\/woman-pleads-guilty-in-middle.html\/\">murdered her lover<\/a> and hired help to encase him in a concrete grave in his Garland backyard forged a judge\u2019s signature this year in a scheme to get out of prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"DMNReferWrapper pull-right panel-flat-medium content-aside sld tf1f1\">\n<div class=\"label-related\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Kwaneta Yatrice Harris faked paperwork ordering her sentence to be decreased from 50 years to eight. That could have led to her release this year.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cShe almost got out,\u201d said lawyer Josh Healy, who originally prosecuted Harris in the murder case. He called the fake paperwork the latest twist in a crime saga that\u2019s \u201clike a movie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Texas Department of Criminal Justice learned of the suspicious paperwork in January and called Dallas County to inquire about its accuracy, a spokesman said Friday. He said Harris, 43, is now being held at a \u201chigher custody level\u201d at the Murray Unit in Gatesville.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Texas Rangers did not immediately respond Friday to questions about a possible investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Harris, a licensed nurse, shot Michael Giles, her on-again, off-again lover of a decade, in the back of the head in 2006.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">She then cooked up an elaborate ploy to cover up the killing of Giles, a military retiree who lived in Garland.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_119214\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/crimeblog.dallasnews.com\/files\/2016\/04\/Kwaneta-Harris-mug.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-119214\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/crimeblog.dallasnews.com\/files\/2016\/04\/Kwaneta-Harris-mug-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Kwaneta Yatrice Harris\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Kwaneta Yatrice Harris<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Harris hired a 13-year-old and his uncle to dig Giles\u2019 grave under the ruse that she was installing a pond, then got a man to pour a 3-by-15-foot concrete slab on top.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">She posed as Giles in emails and texts, telling his family he was in New Mexico and needed some time away. Prosecutors say she even had a new boyfriend pretend to be Giles, dressed up in bandages after a supposed car accident, so she could gain access to Giles\u2019 financial accounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Authorities excavated Giles\u2019 body from his own backyard in 2007.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Garland police arrested Harris, but while out on bond she paid a teenager to confess to the crime, authorities say.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Police didn\u2019t buy it. Neither did prosecutors, who took her to trial in 2009. Harris ended up taking a plea deal for 50 years in prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt\u2019s the craziest case I ever tried in my life,\u201d said Healy, the former prosecutor now in private practice as a defense attorney.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In her failed bid to get out of prison, Harris faked state District Judge Amber Givens-Davis\u2019 signature on a form to \u201ccorrect\u201d her sentence to eight years. It\u2019s unclear how she obtained the form while behind bars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Givens-Davis declined to comment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But the former judge who presided over Harris\u2019 trial said he wasn\u2019t surprised by her latest scheme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThat\u2019s exactly her MO,\u201d Andy Chatham said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">He called her a \u201cclassic con artist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThere is absolutely nothing about Harris that will cause her to take responsibility,\u201d Chatham said. \u201cNo regret. No remorse. She\u2019ll do anything without regard to morals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Lawyers say <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxygen.com\/snapped\">Snapped<\/a><\/em>, a true crime series on the Oxygen network, has taken an interest in the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Harris is scheduled for parole review in 2033.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><em>Staff writer Jennifer Emily contributed to this report.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kwaneta Harris is serving a 50-year sentence for the 2006 murder of Michael Giles.
