It\u2019s just the latest embarrassment for the sheriff\u2019s department, and the first under McDonnell\u2019s watch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">One message reads:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI took my biology exam last Friday. I was asked to name two things commonly found in cells. Apparently \u2018Blacks\u2019 and \u2018Mexicans\u2019 were NOT the correct answers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Another message makes fun of Muslims who are worried about profiling and belittles the religion\u2019s rituals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt\u2019s despicable because I can\u2019t believe that a person of such authority can use government services \u2013 using a government Listserv to circulate such trash against all minorities,\u201d says Salam Al-Marayati, president of the Muslim Public Affairs Council.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">McDonnell said in a statement Sunday that he had accepted Angel\u2019s resignation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cVery recently I learned that three to four years ago LASD Chief Tom Angel shared inappropriate and unprofessional e-mails with others, during his service as Burbank Police Department Assistant Chief,\u201d McDonnell said in a statement. \u201cThis incident is one that I find deeply troubling. Chief Angel has offered his resignation, and I have accepted it. I thank him for his many years of service, and wish him and his family well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cDespite the Sheriff\u2019s Department\u2019s many recent efforts to fortify public trust and enhance internal and external accountability and transparency, this incident reminds us that we and other law enforcement agencies still have work to do. I intend to turn this situation into a learning opportunity for all LASD personnel,\u201d the statement continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">He said the department will also be assessing \u201cexisting policies and systems to ensure \u201caccountability and enhancing cultural and ethnic sensitivity and professionalism among our personnel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">For example, the Sheriff\u2019s Department will be implementing a new system of random audits of the e-mail accounts of department personnel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThe law enforcement profession must and can demand the highest standards of professionalism, fairness and constitutional policing individually and collectively from its personnel,\u201d McConnell said. \u201cWe are only as effective as the relationships, credibility and trust we have with our community; this is a fundamental point that I and LASD personnel take very seriously.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">On February 10, former Sheriff Lee Baca pleaded guilty to lying to federal Justice Department officials investigating jail abuse, he awaits sentencing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">On April 6, former Undersheriff Paul Tanaka was convicted of conspiracy and obstruction of justice for similar crimes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">(\u00a92016 CBS Local Media, a division of CBS Radio Inc.
