A 43-year-old man who called two mosques in Pinellas County and threatened to firebomb them and shoot worshippers was sentenced to a year in prison, according to officials.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"FederalFederal prosecutors said Martin Alan Schnitzler,<\/strong> 43, was sentenced Monday to one year and a day in prison.<\/span><\/p>\n

Schnitzler plead guilty on Feb. 12 to obstructing persons in the free exercise of religious beliefs for issuing the threats.<\/span><\/p>\n

Schnitzler admitted in court papers that on Nov. 13, he intentionally obstructed members of the Islamic Society of St. Petersburg, Florida<\/strong>, and the Islamic Society of Pinellas County from practicing their religion when he left voicemail messages threatening the safety of the mosques\u2019 congregants.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Schnitzler claimed that his threats were prompted by the terrorist attacks in Paris.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Among other things, officials said Schnitzler also admitted that in one of the voicemails he threatened to \u201cpersonally have a militia\u201d report to one of the mosques and \u201cfirebomb you, shoot whoever is there on sight in the head. \u00a0I don\u2019t care if they\u2019re [expletive] two years old or a hundred.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In response to the threats, both mosques requested increased law-enforcement presence at their locations and took extra safety precautions for congregants.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCriminal threats of violence that target people and communities because of their religious beliefs threaten the core values that define a fair and just society \u2013 equal protection and mutual respect for all,\u201d said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta,<\/strong> head of the Justice Department\u2019s Civil Rights Division.\u00a0 \u201cWhen individuals commit religion-based hate crimes, we will hold them accountable for their actions and ensure they face justice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis prosecution sends a clear message to anyone who contemplates the use of threats or intimidation to interfere with the right of individuals to worship as they choose, without fear,\u201d said U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley III of the Middle District of Florida. \u00a0\u201cThe U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office is committed to taking whatever action is necessary to protect this important First Amendment right.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
