{"id":23670,"date":"2016-05-24T16:16:43","date_gmt":"2016-05-24T23:16:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=23670"},"modified":"2016-05-24T16:16:43","modified_gmt":"2016-05-24T23:16:43","slug":"man-charged-hacking-email-accounts-100-people-mostly-celebrities-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=23670","title":{"rendered":"Man Charged with Hacking Email Accounts of More Than 100 People, Mostly Celebrities  (Video)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>LOS ANGELES<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0A Pennsylvania man who hacked email accounts belonging to more than 100 people, mostly celebrities was charged today with felony computer hacking related to a phishing scheme, officials announced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22946 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Courtroom-300x169.png\" alt=\"Courtroom\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Courtroom-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Courtroom.png 650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The scheme gave him illegal access to over 100 Apple and Google email accounts, including those belonging to members of the entertainment industry in Los Angeles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Ryan Collins<\/strong>, 36, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, has signed a plea agreement and agreed to plead guilty to a felony violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In the plea agreement also filed today, Collins agreed to plead guilty to one count of unauthorized access to a protected computer to obtain information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Although Collins has been charged in Los Angeles, the parties have agreed to transfer the case to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, near Collins\u2019 home, for the entry of his guilty plea and sentencing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Collins will face up to five years in federal prison. The parties have agreed to recommend a prison term of 18 months, but that recommendation will not be binding on the sentencing judge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cToday, people store important private information in their online accounts and in their digital devices,\u201d said U.S. Attorney Eileen M. Decker. \u201cLawless unauthorized access to such private information is a criminal offense. My Office remains committed to protecting sensitive and personal information from the malicious actions of sophisticated hackers and cyber criminals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/widget\/video-embed\/323997251968\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">According to factual basis in the plea agreement, from November 2012 until the beginning of September 2014, Collins engaged in a phishing scheme to obtain usernames and passwords for his victims. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">He sent emails to victims that appeared to be from Apple or Google and asked victims to provide their usernames and passwords.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> When the victims responded, officials said Collins then had access to the victims\u2019 email accounts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">After illegally accessing the email accounts, Collins obtained personal information including nude photographs and videos, according to his plea agreement. In some instances, Collins would use a software program to download the entire contents of the victims\u2019 Apple iCloud backups, according to officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The charge against Collins stems from the investigation into the leaks of photographs of numerous female celebrities in September 2014 known as \u201cCelebgate.\u201d However, investigators have not uncovered any evidence linking Collins to the actual leaks or that Collins shared or uploaded the information he obtained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Many of Collins\u2019 victims were members of the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">By illegally accessing the e-mail accounts, Collins accessed at least 50 iCloud accounts and 72 Gmail accounts, most of which belonged to female celebrities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cBy illegally accessing intimate details of his victims&#8217; personal lives, Mr. Collins violated their privacy and left many to contend with lasting emotional distress, embarrassment and feelings of insecurity,\u201d said <strong>David Bowdich, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI\u2019s Los Angeles Field Office.<\/strong> \u201cWe continue to see both celebrities and victims from all walks of life suffer the consequences of this crime and strongly encourage users of Internet-connected devices to strengthen passwords and to be skeptical when replying to emails asking for personal
