Officer Admits to Trying to Smuggle Mexican Citizen into U.S. in a Spare Tire Well  (News Video)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>SAN DIEGO<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Former Los Angeles police <strong>Officer Carlos Curiel Quezada, Jr<\/strong>., plead guilty in federal court today on charges that he attempted to smuggle a Mexican citizen into the U.S. in the spare tire well of his car at the Otay Mesa border crossing in March of 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">His girlfriend, <strong>Angelica Godinez,<\/strong> 31, plead guilty to lying on an application for court-appointed counsel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> Both are scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 26.\u00a0The defendants are facing up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 fine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><script src=\"http:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/portableplayer\/?cmsID=296511391&amp;videoID=paQTsBlGFiZA&amp;origin=nbclosangeles.com&amp;sec=news&amp;subsec=local&amp;width=600&amp;height=360\" type=\"text\/javascript\" charset=\"UTF-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">According to court documents, Quezada, 34, drove his 2014 Nissan Juke, with Godinez as the front seat passenger, into the U.S. through the Otay Mesa Port of Entry on March 14, 2015, at about 6:30 p.m. They presented their U.S. passports and told a Customs and Border Protection Officer they had nothing to declare.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> The officer decided to refer them aside for a more intensive inspection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">During the inspection, officers examined the car with the Z-Portal, a non-intrusive imaging device similar to an X-ray, and detected something unusual in the rear cargo area of the vehicle. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Antanasio Perez Avalos<\/strong>, a 26-year-old Mexican national, was found in a compartment in the spare-tire area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Los Angeles police Officer Carlos Curiel Quezada, Jr., plead guilty in federal court today on charges that he attempted to smuggle a Mexican citizen into the U.S. in the spare tire well of his car at the Otay Mesa border crossing in March of 2015.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":7470,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16,3],"tags":[874,2711,2296],"class_list":["post-23928","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-home-main-slider","category-u-s-department-of-justice","tag-los-angeles-deputy","tag-mexican-citizen","tag-u-s-customs-and-border-patrol-protection"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.6 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Former L.A.
